The “dome” of half dome is an illusion. Both sides of Half Dome are actually comparably steep, however viewed from the angle of the valley floor, it appears to have a curved, dome shape on its back and a steep cliff face on its front. If viewed from Washburn Point, it can be seen as less of a dome and more of a monolith sticking straight up, apparently flat on both sides.
